Southern Electric - Energy Made Better

Southern Electric is proud to sponsor the Eco-Rally 2009 as part of our commitment to green technology. Southern Electric recognises that its vehicles will play a major part in reducing its carbon footprint. Our vehicles service a wide geographical area and we are proactive in trialling alternative fuels, vehicles and technologies.

Our vision is to reduce both the annual mileage and consumption of our vehicles. We are actively using Electric Vehicles in our Southern Electric fleet and we have trialled the use of both LPG and Compressed Natural Gas.

These innovations are additions to our common sense approach to sustainability. We have measured significant benefits from electronically limiting speeds, the procurement of Smart cars and using tyres that are proven to be both fuel-efficient and long-lasting.

Park and Power LogoAccording to the Department for Transport (DfT), widespread adoption of electric vehicles capable of a range of 50km or more could cut UK road transport carbon emissions in half.

Electric transport needs a safe and sustainable infrastructure to ensure its integration is accessible and simple for all to use. The Park and Power solution delivers this in a convenient, well tried and tested format.

All forms of electric transport - cars, motorbikes, bikes and older person buggies can now benefit from the Park and Power system. As installations of Park and Power points grow so will the usability and desirability of electric transport.

Mayor of London
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is pleased to be hosting at London's City Hall the 2009 Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership Conference, the 2009 WhatCar? Awards and the 2009 Revolve Eco-Rally as part of his wider commitment to promoting low carbon transport in the capital.

The Mayor has a target to cut carbon emissions in the capital by 60 per cent by 2025 helping to create 'green-collar' jobs in a thriving low carbon economy. There are a range of flagship initiatives underway to achieve this including: turning London into the electric car capital of Europe with 25,000 charging points by 2015; adding 1,000 electric vehicles to the Greater London Authority group fleet, a hybrid bus fleet by 2012 and trialling low carbon technology in London's taxi fleet. The Mayor will make a keynote speech at the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership Conference.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership's mission is "To accelerate a sustainable shift to low carbon vehicles and fuels in the UK and thereby stimulate opportunities for UK businesses” with the following aims:

1. To facilitate cross-sectoral engagement between industry and other stakeholders

2. To encourage research, demonstration and commercialisation of low carbon automotive technologies in the UK and help UK businesses to participate in emerging markets.

3. To contribute towards the setting and achievement of UK Government targets for carbon reduction from the road transport sector

4. To coordinate an effective flow of information within and between industry and other stakeholders. The LowCVP is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.

Love London Love Your Planet Green Festival LogoThe Eco-Rally compliments all three of the Love London Festival's main themes: Green Places, Green Living and Green Innovations. With recession hitting London and Londoners hard there is concern that Green initiatives will slip to the bottom of the agenda. In reality, though, this is an opportunity as there has never been a better incentive for Londoners to start making sustainable lifestyle changes - many of which will also save a few pennies.
