European debut of Ford's zero-emission Explorer SUV at 2007 Eco-Rally
Despite the fact that the Explorer is an SUV, the only emission coming from the exhaust is water and the only audible noise is from the big fat nobbly tyres. The all-wheel drive, 6-passenger vehicle has already undergone 17,000 miles of road testing and set a fuel cell record for longest distance traveled in 24hrs. Motoring writer and presenter, Quentin Willson drove both of Ford's hydrogen fuel cell powered prototypes during the Eco-Rally and shares his views on the evolution towards hydrogen in the video below.
The SUV shape allows plenty of room for the fuel cell electric drivetrain with the large tank of hydrogen gas centrally mounted where the redundant, heavy automatic gearbox would normally go. The Explorer FCV boasts an unprecedented 350 mile range - some 150 more miles than their previous fuel cell prototype. Explorer FCV can also carry six full-size passengers on board, plus their luggage. Not many other hydrogen-powered vehicles can match it in that respect.

The European debut of this concept car proved controversial and some spectators wondered if a fuel-cell powered SUV is really necessary. After all, the only reason urban SUVs became popular is because of a loop-hole in the strict Californian emissions regulations. However, it was intentionally based on one of North America's favourite vehicles to impress even the most cynical Republican of the potential of hydrogen and electric cars.
The fact that all the prototypes reached the finish line, proves that zero emission motoring is closer than some people think. The Explorer FCV was the centrepiece of the blue oval's line up, flanked by Ford's Flexifuel range (FFV) of green cars that are affordable and available now.
