How the UK can meet its goal to cut GHG emissions by 80%
Climate change and the vulnerability of energy supplies are two of the biggest threats to our security. Without urgent action, irreversible changes to the climate system are possible. The UK’s loss of energy self-sufficiency coupled with volatile global markets poses new risks.
The UK Energy Research Centre is hosting an event to showcase the findings of an ambitious cross-Centre research project – UKERC Energy 2050. The results will show how the UK can meet its goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 while dealing with anxieties about energy security.
The project, over two years in the making, has involved a unique whole systems investigation of energy in the UK. It utilises UKERC’s complete set of interdisciplinary skills covering economics, engineering and the physical, environmental and social sciences, taking full account of technology, lifestyle and environmental dimensions.
The project has focused on a set of critical issues that may help or hinder the creation of a low-carbon, resilient UK energy system. Findings on each of these topics will be presented at the event:
- Pathways to a low carbon economy
- How to build a resilient UK energy economy
- Fast-tracking low energy technologies
- Lifestyle and behaviour change
- A change of scale? Prospects for microgeneration
- Not just climate change: other environmental perspectives
