ITM Power's green hydrogen-powered car
ITM Power's specially adapted Ford Focus is an example of how conventioanl engines can be fuelled on 'Green Hydrogen'. This can be produced anywhere using only water and renewable electricity using ITM’s world-beating electrolyser technology. For this year's Eco-Rally, guest drivers include a BBC Click journalist and Quentin Willson.
As the government decides the toughest spending round for a generation, motoring expert Quentin Willson has called for tax breaks for hydrogen and says we should have spent the money used to bail out Northern Rock on a hydrogen infrastructure for the UK.
'We need incentives from Europe and our government to create a hydrogen transport industry in the UK. We could be world leader at this, selling the technology everywhere, but we need a clear message that this government will back clean hydrogen transport 100%. They also need to understand that building a new green economy will pull this country out of the current recession faster than anything else.- Quentin Willson
Find out what politician Zac Goldsmith had to say, when he drove the hydrogen-powered car in Eco-Rally 2009.
The technology can be applied to all combustion engines, as demonstrated when Revolve Technologies drove their hydrogen/petrol Ford Transit (developed in conjunction with ITM Power) to Copenhagen as part of the 2009 climate change summit Eco-Rally.
