Saab BioPower Convertible

Vehicle image

As of June 2007, Saab is the first and only car company in the UK to offer an alternative-fuel engine in every model in its line-up. Their BioPower range currently uses either straight petrol, or a blend containing up to 85% bioethanol (where available). This fuel is currently sourced from sugarcane or other crops that are not suitable to be grown in cleared rainforest areas.

His Royal Highness, Prince Charles is also very interested in the ability to produce bioethanol using agricultural surplus including wine. As it's a liquid and not a gas, it can be transported using the existing refuelling infrastructure.

Lisa Rogers has been a supporter of the Brighton to London Eco-Rally since the beginning. So far she's test-driven a zero emission Nissan FCV and a biothenol Saab convertible. She also joined our People's Eco-Rally in her her own car which is converted to run on pure vegetable oil and is looking forward to Bridgestone Eco-Rally 2010.

About the Exhibitor

GM (Saab's parent company at the time of writing) and The Linde Group, both of whom took part in the 2007 Eco-Rally, are key players in the development of second-generation bioefuels. This development will avoid the food vs fuel issue and further reduce carbon emissions. 100% renewable raw materials such as surplus grain, wood chips, and even household waste - will provide locally-produced fuel, transported over shorter distances.
