Science Minister drives Biofuel Ford Focus at Eco-Rally 2007
35% of the carbon emissions from this Ford Focus FFV are absorbed from the atmosphere by the crops used to make the fuel. Ford is working with regional biofuel groups to establish FFV sales and bioethanol filling stations.
The Revolve Eco-Rally shows how car manufacturers across the world are getting the green message in terms of their contribution to climate change.
- Rt Hon Malcolm Wicks, Minister for Science & Innovation

“Tackling climate change is a huge global challenge. We believe the UK must put its best efforts towards developing the new technologies we need to help cut carbon emissions. There’s also a great economic opportunity for UK businesses in investing in this area.”
- Rt Hon. Malcolm Wicks, Minister for Science & Innovation
Ford engineers are also working on hybrid, clean diesel, hydrogen combustion and fuel cell powertrains to accommodate the variety of resources and requirements around the world that will dictate which technologies are likely to catch on.
"There's no single solution. Different regions around the world will move toward a local solution based not only on the major policy issues of the time, but on the established infrastructure, political climate and unique economies as well as consumer income levels, driving habits, vehicle requirements and preferences."
- Nancy Gioia, Ford Motor Company director of Sustainable Mobility Technology Lab and Hybrid Vehicle Programs
Flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which can run on either gasoline or E85 (a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline), are making inroads in Europe, but again with a regional twist. Ethanol in North America is derived primarily from corn, but 150 Ford FFVs in the United Kingdom are powered by bioethanol made from wheat and sugar beets.
