climate change

Changes in Earth's climate system: average global temperature, rainfall and other fundamental patterns. Naturally occurring factors, such as changes in the sun, affect the earth's temperature but most scientists believe that these are not powerful enough to explain the recent rapid warming.

The 10 years up to the end of 2009 were the hottest recorded since global surface temperature measurements began. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts a further temperature rise of between 1.1 and 6.4 ºC in the next century.

Humans boost the naturally occurring greenhouse effect by releasing extra greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). CO2 is mostly connected to energy-generation, i.e. burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Methane is mostly connected to food & farming. Both methane and carbon dioxide are released through land use change, such as drainage of peat bogs and deforestation. [source: Start's guide to climate change]
