Short journey vehicles

What if there was more space to drive and more space to park...

In the UK, most motorists drive to work alone, carrying only minimal luggage, meaning more than half the vehicle is usually 'dead weight and wasted space’. Many households feel they need the flexibility of more than one car, so it makes sense to either car-share or make that second vehicle as small as possible. Two-seater cars can be parked sideways, squeeze through small gaps, accelerate faster and get through traffic lights quicker - using less energy - making that commute to work much faster and more pleasant. Comprehensive studies show that three Smart cars can pass through a set of traffic lights in the same time as two average sized cars plus two Smart cars can fit into one parking space.

Chronic congestion has reached record levels in some cities. The UK's biggest breakdown organisation now uses the motorbikes and electric scooters to cut through traffic and reach breakdowns in central London up to 33% quicker, getting members and other traffic moving again with minimum delay.

The Tata Ace is the most popular light commercial vehicle in India today. A full electric vehicle derivative is to be launched in the UK in 2010. It offers the real practicality of a small half-tonne chassis cab, with the benefits of a low cost highly efficient all electric drivetrain. The Tata Ace EV (electric vehicle) is ideal for Local Authority and local fleet operations where air quality and silent operation are paramount. The small truck has been developed in the UK, built in the Midlands, and complies with UK Construction and Use Regulations allowing full registration as EU Category N1.

Barclays Cycle Hire will be a public bicycle sharing scheme for short journeys in and around central London. You'll be able to pick up a bicycle, use it as you like, then drop it off, ready for the next person - reducing the growing gap between public transport capacity and demand. Eco-Rally visitors can test ride the prototype bike, prior to launch on 30 July 2010.

Best Buy are showcasing some of the best and most affordable electric transport at the Bridgestone Eco-Rally - all of which will be available in their stores. Best Buy customers will also be able to charge their electric cars for free whilst they shop at all Best Buy stores in the UK.

This is the only motorised ferry allowed across the historic and ecologically sensitive Serpentine. Two silent electric motors make this boat easy to handle and allow it to turn on a point. The Solar Shuttle will eliminate the production of 2900lbs of CO2 per year compared with a conventional diesel boat of similar size.

Low maintenance, modular design, regenerative braking, re-fuelled with hydrogen in about 7 mins. Currently part of the largest zero emission transport trial in the world. Designed in Coventry and in everyday operation as a postal van at Birmingham University - home to the UK's first hydrogen re-fueling station.

What if all cars were zero emissions? In an increasing number of countries, that would just mean that being stuck in a traffic-jam would be a more pleasant way to waste your time - but it doesn't have to be that way...
