With the summer-term breaks getting underway, millions of families across the UK are preparing to pack up and get set for long car journeys as they hit the road on holidays.
Hated by deep green environmentalists and described by some as a 'rich chavs MPV', the nearly 3-tonne, 3-litre V6 'sporty SUV' is Range Rover's biggest selling car worldwide and loved for it's imperious driving position and intelligent, weight-defying suspension. So you may be wondering how it qualifies to be in the Eco-Rally. This particular model is a hire car from Oxford-based Dreamcarhire.com and like all their cars, it is locally carbon-offset, making it not such a guilty pleasure after all. In addition OxtreeGen will be using it to collect unwanted mobile phones at every location which will be recycled to help carbon-offset the entire Bridgestone Eco-Rally event. It is also the perfect car for a celebrity model to escape the paparazzi!

Green Tomato Cars were the first to introduce a plug-in hybrid Prius to its London fleet, meaning their cars travel longer in fully-electric mode, producing no tailpipe emissions whatsoever. In congested city centres such as London motorists travel no faster than they did using a horse & cart in the 19th century. Hybrids are congestion charge exempt, but unlike the average battery-powered quadricycle, they are full-sized saloons and their electric motors are charged by the engine, making them good for long distance trips too.
Most city-folk can go for weeks without needing a car, but when we do, we like to treat ourselves. Streetcar is currently the UK's biggest car club and one of their strengths is their attractive, low-emission vehicle range. In 2007 they teamed up with VW to launch the 2007 Polo BlueMotion in the UK. Now all their VW cars and vans carry the Bluemotion badge, plus they now stock BMWs with Efficient Dynamics, including the 118d - 2008 World Green Car of the Year.
Streetcar is the official car club for Bridgestone Eco-Rally 2010. They have cars parked in a dense network of dedicated spaces across London and several other UK cities, typically within a few minutes walk of your home or work. You can use one for as little as 30 minutes or as long as 6 months.
This will be the first public demonstration of EVO Electric’s DuoDrive hybrid system, an original powertrain solution that gives improved driving performance and fuel economy for a range of commercial vehicle applications including taxis and delivery vans. The technology will help London and other cities meet their carbon reduction goals, while also providing commercial vehicle manufacturers and operators with a cost-effective means of meeting upcoming emission regulations.
Ben and Mits from City Car Club played a vital role in the People's Eco-Rally: ferrying event organisers Revolve, our film crew, most of our equipment and our judges to Brighton the night before the big day.
What if all cars were zero emissions? In an increasing number of countries, that would just mean being stuck in a traffic-jam would be a more pleasant way to waste your time - but it doesn't have to be that way... A car club provides its members with quick and easy access to a car for short term hire. Members can make use of car club vehicles as and when they need them.
