Case Study : The VOSA Travel Plan

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is synonymous with roadworthiness, driver-compliance and emissions-testing so they need to ensure they 'practice what they preach'. VOSA is in the process of upgrading their fleet with new Euro IV diesels and hybrids (+/- 5 per cent).

At the height of the fuel protests and the heated debate about food vs fuel, Revolve set British motorists a challenge: Drive from Brighton to London in the greenest way you can. The destination was a music festival on Clapham Common, where the drivers were tested for eco-driving skills whilst their cars were tested for emissions.

In a recent survey, 23% have either used or are considering using car rental as an alternative to car ownership. Paul Wilson is one of those people and the Eco-Rally coincided with a week when he needed to hire a car, so he decided to take part and share his views.

Our panel of expert judges used the e-factor: energy, efficiency & enthusiasm to decide on the greenest vehicles and drivers. Exhaust emissions were measured by VOSA and the driver's skill was tested in the eco-driving simulator provided by the Energy Saving Trust.

The car-sharing company also displayed one of their MINIs at the finish line on Clapham Common. Over a third of Zipcar customers have either sold their car or have stopped their purchasing decision.
