Leading geophysicists predict that peak-oil is either currently occurring, or will have occurred by 2015. Meanwhile, demand for oil continues to increase at an extraordinary rate, with increasingly negative social and ecological consequences. Are you ready to switch?
The following guide explains the visions, aims and principles of the various behaviour changes and propulsion technologies currently being developed to reduce our dependance on fossil fuels, cut congestion and reduce emissions in the hope of a better quality of life.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is manufactured during the refining of crude oil, or extracted from oil or gas streams as they emerge from the ground. When LPG is used to fuel internal combustion engines, it is often referred to as autogas. In some countries, it has been used since the 1940s as an alternative fuel for spark ignition engines. More recently, it has also been used in diesel engines.
Up until very recently, whether or not a car is "green" was less important to most British motorists than the actual colour of the paint. However, the most important factor was, and still is, price. BCA - the UK's largest used car seller, has provided proof that motorists are now making the connection between the two by discovering that there is a strong demand for hybrid/electric and LPG powered cars in the used car market. In fact they are selling well above the market price for their petrol and diesel counterparts.
For the People's Eco-Rally 2008, eco-cars.net entered their dual-fuel Toyota Aygo which can use either petrol or LPG. Running on LPG, the 80 mile Brighton to Kent to London trip cost them just £4 and emitted under 100grams of CO2 per km. Road tax is £15 a year and it's London congestion charge exempt in LPG mode... even under the revised rules.
Our panel of expert judges used the e-factor: energy, efficiency & enthusiasm to decide on the greenest vehicles and drivers. Exhaust emissions were measured by VOSA and the driver's skill was tested in the eco-driving simulator provided by the Energy Saving Trust.
