Vintage Roots, The Organic Wine People

Our wine is imported from around the world and delivered to your door. Bottles shipped from Chile or South Africa actually generates a smaller carbon footprint than wine driven from Sicily or Portugal. We want to upgrade our delivery vans and investigate biodiesel.

About the Organisation

Vintage Roots - the UK's leading (home delivery) supplier of carefully selected, high quality organic wines since 1986. The company is carbon-neutral and all 'wine-miles' are carbon offset, using accredited schemes in developing countries where possible. Winner of the Decanter accolade for Best Specialist Independent Wine Merchant 2009, Vintage Roots started out as three friends with a wish to work for themselves promoting something they passionately believed in and could enjoy at the same time - hence organic wine!

With a shortlist of organic vineyard addresses, a somewhat battered Citroen 2CV and a tent, they set off for France and researched our first wine list which consisted of just twelve wines and was published on a single sheet of A4 paper. Early years (about eight!) were very tough and financially very unexciting! However they stuck to our beliefs that organic wines were the way forward and continued to be inspired by the quality-oriented, passionate growers and other committed people in the organic industry.

Vintage Roots today

Their values, energy and passion for good wine and for organic produce remain as strong as ever. These days, however, the team has grown somewhat to cope with demand and their list consists of some three hundred organic and biodynamic wines, dozens of beers along with numerous organic ciders, spirits, liqueurs, juices and even chocolate.

Vintage Roots has a farm near Heckfield with an organic shop out front with more warehouse space in the back and curious cows looking in the office window – beats corporate life!

Wine Miles

Vintage Roots commissioned a study to reveal the true carbon footprint of all its wine imports, using a specialist leading carbon company called Carbon Clear. The results show that a longer distance traveled by ship is not as damaging as lots of shorter trips by a conventional lorry or truck.

Carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting is a way of compensating for the emissions produced with an equivalent carbon saving. Carbon offsetting involves calculating emissions and then purchasing ‘credits’ from emission reduction projects. Carbon offsetting is NOT a cure for climate change, however we believe that it helps raise awareness of the issues.
